Newborn Hearing Screening

Specialized hearing care and newborn screening for children.

Newborn Hearing Screening

Hearing loss is one of the most common congenital anomalies. Early detection and intervention are crucial for a child’s speech, language, and cognitive development.

The 1-3-6 Rule for Newborns

We strictly follow the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) recommendations to ensure no child is left behind:

  • Screen by 1 month of age.
  • Diagnose any hearing loss by 3 months of age.
  • Intervene and begin rehabilitation by 6 months of age.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Testing

Our clinics are equipped to perform complete test batteries, moving beyond simple behavioral observation to objective, clinical diagnostics:

  • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs): A quick, painless test to analyze the health of the cochlea (inner ear).
  • Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR/BERA): Provides detailed information about the functionality of the complete inner ear and auditory nerve.

Watch for Late-Onset Signs

Even if a child passes their newborn screening, parents should remain vigilant for late-onset hearing loss. Consult our audiologists if your child:

  • Doesn’t startle at loud noises or turn toward sounds by 3-4 months.
  • Is slow to begin talking or doesn’t say single words by 12-15 months.
  • Frequently needs the TV volume turned up high.
  • Has inconsistent responses when called from a distance.

Who this is for

  • Newborns requiring hearing screening.
  • Toddlers with delayed speech development.
  • Children experiencing recurrent ear infections.

What to expect

  • 1 Child-friendly behavioral observation.
  • 2 OAE and BERA testing if necessary.
  • 3 Guidance for parents on developmental milestones.
  • 4 Ongoing support for pediatric hearing solutions.
